Since last week's announcement, I've received inquiries from a pretty diverse set of folks about our upcoming reading group. If you're visiting here for the first time, I want to emphasize that the group discussion, which begins next week, will be completely virtual and hosted here on our site.
If you'd like to participate, there's still time. Just send me a message with "Reading Group" as the subject.
What's great about our first selection is that each of its chapters is independent of the rest. If you miss a week for one reason or another, don't worry – you can jump back into the ring the following week.
So what are we reading and discussing? The Ecology of Games: Connecting Youth, Games, and Learning, edited by game designer and educator Katie Salen as part of the MacArthur Foundation's Series on Digital Media and Learning.
(Two notes: Kurt Squire, one of our founders, contributed a chapter. Plus, you can download the book's open access edition from MIT Press.)
We'll be discussing one of its eleven chapters each week, beginning next week with Toward an Ecology of Gaming. Of course, we'll take a break for Thanksgiving and still be done before the holiday season kicks into high gear.
If you want to get a better sense of the book, I highly recommend John Palfrey's book review. Join us to find out why he describes it as "an excellent primer on where innovation is happening at the intersection between games and learning and where future avenues for research offer promise."
