Here’s the ultimate challenge — we need gamers who want to convince the world that digital games are not only cool, but that you can actually learn while playing them!
The Learning Games Network and AMD are excited to announce a video contest for current students in the U.S., age 13 and older, to tell their stories and share their ideas on how education can and will change with digital games.
Our competition is now accepting entries in two categories:
(I) My “Aha” Moment
What’s an “aha” moment, you ask? Have you ever played a game and unexpectedly made a connection with something you learned someplace else? Something that made you think, “Aha!” If you’ve experienced that spark of realization, that moment of epiphany between an idea from a game and something you learned — at school, at home, or anywhere else — tell us about it in your video.
What game were you playing? How did you connect it to something else you had learned? When and where were you when you made the connection — re-playing the game, studying for a test, reading a textbook, doing your homework, crossing the street? We want to know!
(II) My Dream Assignment
Imagine you’re a teacher or coach assigning homework or a class activity that requires students to play a game in a favorite class, in one they’re having trouble with, or in a subject area where they just want to do better. Do you have an idea for a great game for learning?
What kind of game would it be? What would it help players learn? Why would your video game be a better way to learn something? In your video, tell us what challenges players would face and how they would learn from them.
Inspiration
Be creative! Be thoughtful! Be passionate! Other than that, we don’t want to put too many rules or restrictions on your entry. Your video might just be you talking. Or, it could include a slideshow or artwork that you and your friends make. If your video describes an idea for a video game, it could even feature you and your friends simulating the game! Videos must be between two (2) and three (3) minutes long and be entrants’ original work.
Categories & Prizes
For each of our two categories described above, judging will be organized across three (3) age groups: Middle School, High School (grades 9-12), and Post-Secondary.
Thanks to AMD, each first place winner (selected by our panel of judges) will receive a 16 inch HP Pavilion dv6 series notebook, powered by an AMD Turion™ X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processor ZM-84.
In addition, “People’s Choice” winners (selected by YOU and your pals) will receive a new iPod Shuffle®. All winners will be announced and notified by email in early September 2009.
How to Enter:
- Visit http://www.aha-moment.org for all the latest contest details
- Pick one of the two categories above (you can enter in both categories, if you’d like)
- Create a two (2) to three (3) minute video
- Upload your video to the LGN Video Contest YouTube Group
- Complete and submit this entry form.
Enter by July 31, 2009 at 11:59PM Eastern Time (“ET”). “People’s Choice” voting will begin August 1, 2009 at 12:01AM ET and conclude August 31, 2009 at 11:59PM ET. By submitting your video and personal information, you agree to the Contest’s Terms and Conditions.
